Hello everyone

Hello everyone,

I'm Steven and I'll be one of your hosts throughout this course (along with James Taylor in Brazil)

I'm originally from Canada and have been teaching EFL in Japan for over 25 years. I'm in my last year of a contract at a woman's college in Kyoto, Japan, but will be moving permanently to ANOTHER woman's college in Kyoto from April 2018. Currently, I teach TOEFL iBT, IELTS, and TOEIC preparation, as well as a senior seminar on leadership. I still love teaching and learning after all these years.

I'm one of the founders of iTDi and I am thrilled that we currently have 36 teachers from 22 different countries in this course!

I've hosted over 25 courses and dozen of webinars with iTDi so far in, and as much as I love all the guest teachers we bring in, I'll always have a special place in my heart for Penny - her vast experience, her observational wisdom, and her attention to the practical needs of the students always inspires me to continue to try to improve my own teaching.

I'll be in our online classroom about 1 hour before we officially start if any of you want to come in and check that you can see, hear, and type easily. The room will officially open 30 minutes before Session 1 begins.

For error correction I tend to use the most frequent type of correction, recast.

For error correction I tend to use the most frequent type of correction, recast. I believe I use it because it's quick and doesn't harm fluency and communication entirely. But like Penny Ur mentioned, this type of correction all the time may be ineffective and may I add fall on deaf ears most of the times. Research shows that the best correction methods are elicitation, metalinguistic feedback and explicit correction so I feel I need to use more of these methods when correcting my students. Also, sometimes I let errors go by uncorrected mostly because I consider them minor or unimportant errors but there are times when students notice them and correct them. Perhaps it's best the teacher corrects all errors and not the students because it could come across as if the teacher wasn't listening or doesn't care and because learners would rather be corrected by the their teacher than their peers as research shows.
